“Pop up” pavilion structures created by 6a architects, June 2008     31st May 2008

Commissioned by Brompton Estates and in association with Icon magazine for LFA 2008. An experimental architecture project described as the ‘pop-up pavilion’ will be presented at London Festival of Architecture this year. Brompton Estates has commissioned a series of ‘pop-up’ structures designed by 6a Architects and in partnership with Icon magazine. The stair- shaped structures are designed to be interactive, publicly accessible and are easily assembled and demounted (to pop up or down) in a public place. The temporary ‘pop-up’ structures will be erected on Exhibition Road which will be closed to traffic during the London Festival of Architecture from the 20th – 22nd June.

There are many possibilities for the structures: a single unit can be used as a single pavilion/chair; numerous structures can be fixed together to form an archway, an arena-style pavilion, a stand, a stage etc. The structures will explore and promote experimental architecture providing a platform for talks, events, mini-exhibitions and promotional activities during LFA. The talks and events programme as well as the marketing and promotion of the project, will be undertaken by partners: Brompton Estates, Icon magazine, 6a Architects and the London Festival of Architecture. The pop up structures will be branded by the partners and painted gold, like ‘ingots’ for the RBKC hub and then taken on to be used by other hubs during LFA 2008.

A bit of background on those involved:

Brompton Estates was responsible for initiating the Brompton Design District in 2007 as an umbrella organisation to promote a programme of exhibitions and activities in the Brompton area. The Brompton Design District aims to promote awareness of design and architecture and provides a showcase for a broad range of design activities including nurturing and encouraging new design talent.

6a Architects is acknowledged as one of the leading young UK architectural practices. It is uniquely able to bridge the gap between artistic and technical innovations in architecture and the commercial realities of development. The practice produces work on a variety of scales: from product and exhibition design to art galleries and large scale housing developments. London Festival of Architecture 2008 will attract 20,000 visitors to the Exhibition Road hub over the weekend of the 21st July. The Exhibition Road hub will be made up of a number of exciting architecture projects including: Storefront for Art and Architecture exhibition presenting Bjarke Ingels and a temporary gridshell structure by Norman Foster Architects. The bi-annual LFA will run across London from 20th

June – 20th July. Icon is one of the world’s finest architecture and design magazines. Well presented and accessible, rigorous and insightful, icon identifies exactly what’s happening in architecture and design today, and what it means for the future. Icon is working with LFA to print a definitive guide to the London Festival of Architecture 2008.
