London Design Festival, August 2007     31st July 2007

For London Design Festival this September leading design shops, exhibition spaces and institutions in South Kensington, Brompton Cross and Brompton Quarter have joined forces as the Brompton Design District.

A highlight of the LDF, special events in the Brompton Design District will include:
Townhouse DK, a mews house renovated as a showcase for new Danish design; a temporary shop by Benchmark showcasing the latest collection of handmade furniture in certified timbers; Gallery Libby Sellers ‘Grandmateria’, a new temporary gallery showing rising design stars. The old art studio at 5 Cromwell Place will host Gradual, a show of new work by recent graduates from the Royal College of Art and The New World, an exhibition of new designers drawn together from around the world by the British Council. Special exhibits will be shown by iconic design retailers such as B&B Italia, Bisazza, Mint, The Conran Shop, Rabih Hage, Smallbone of Devizes and Skandium as well as the Campana Brothers commission for the Victoria and Albert museum garden.

The Brompton design project, initiated by Brompton Estates and local organisations, began last year to increase the presence of new design in an area renowned for its important design shops as well as its historic links with design and education since the founding of the Victoria and Albert Museum and Royal College of Art 150 years ago. So far it has included temporary installations in shops and shop windows by Ron Arad, Martino Gamper and Caravan; a roaming gallery by curator Rachael Barraclough; a temporary bar designed and run by RCA students, and, for last year’s LDF, a projection by Lippa Pearce on Empire House, Brompton Road.

An open evening event for the Brompton Design District will be held on September 20th 2007. A red routemaster bus will ferry visitors between the Brompton Design District and 100% Design at Earl’s Court on September 20th (5–9pm) and 23rd (12–4pm).
